Misconceptions in Geometry Problem-Solving Among Junior High School Students: A Van Hiele Levels and Gender Perspective

Abstract

The learning process is said to be successful if more than half of students in the class have understood the concept. However, facts in the field and some studies show that the misconceptions of mathematics, especially geometry, among junior high school students are high. This study aims to describe junior high school students' misconceptions in solving geometry problems regarding Van Hiele level and gender. The subjects of this research are students of class VIII in one of the public junior high schools in Balikpapan consisting of 3 male and 3 female students with different Van Hiele levels who experience the most misconceptions. The instruments of this research are geometry problems and interview guidelines. The results showed that the misconceptions of male students (66.67%) were higher than female students (57.89%). Male subjects were more concise in writing answers than female subjects. Male and female subjects at level 0 experienced all types of misconceptions (mistakenly identifying the length of the side of the shape and its unit, writing the volume and area formulas). Male subjects at level 1 experienced all types of misconceptions (wrong calculation, wrong memorization, and use of area and Pythagorean formulas), while female subjects experienced all types of misconceptions except translation and systematic. Subjects' misconceptions at level 2 were not much different, male subjects experienced misconceptions of arithmetic; concepts; and strategies, while female subjects experienced misconceptions of algebraic operations; concepts; and strategies (miscalculating, mistakenly writing the Pythagorean formula). © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
