Analysis of junior high school students' scientific literacy ability on the topic of motion and force

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the level of science literacy skills of junior high school students on the material of motion and force. This research type is a quantitative survey design involving 42 grade VIII students in one of the public junior high schools in Malang who have taken the topic of motion and force. The instrument used in this research is the Science Literacy Motion and Force Test, which is in the form of objective questions with a reliability of 0.705 (high). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics followed by classification of rankings based on subtopics and each indicator of students' science literacy. The results showed that students had very low category science literacy skills, both on the total score and on each indicator of science literacy skills on the motion subtopic and force subtopic. In-depth analysis shows that the results of the score distribution are dominated by the lowest score because students have difficulty providing reasons for appropriate answers. Therefore, students' understanding of concepts that can be related to students' science literacy skills must be emphasized. The use of project-based learning and STEAM integration will support this because students are easier to explore according to the understanding gained. © 2025 Author(s).
