Assessing the Impact of Emotional Intelligence and Mathematical Disposition on Mathematical Communication Proficiency in High School

Abstract

Mathematical communication is essential for enhancing students' problem-solving abilities, involving skills such as interpreting images, tables, and graphs, explaining mathematical ideas in their own words, and expressing real-world events using mathematical symbols. However, existing research has largely focused on cognitive aspects, neglecting the role of affective and emotional factors in developing mathematical communication skills. This study examines the influence of mathematical disposition and emotional intelligence on high school students' mathematical communication skills, extending prior research by integrating cognitive and psychological perspectives. A multiple linear regression method was employed to analyze the relationship between mathematical disposition (X1), emotional intelligence (X2), and mathematical communication skills (Y). The study involved 32 students from the 10th-grade science class at one of the vocational higher education institutions in Cianjur Regency. for the 2021-2022 academic year. Data were collected using essay tests and questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, regression analysis, and coefficient of determination tests. The results, analyzed using R software, indicate that both mathematical disposition and emotional intelligence significantly influence mathematical communication skills, either individually or collectively, within a moderate category. These findings suggest that fostering a positive mathematical disposition and emotional resilience can enhance students’ ability to communicate mathematical ideas effectively. Educators should integrate strategies such as reflective learning, collaborative problem-solving, and emotional intelligence training to improve mathematical communication. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
