Rapid development at the State University of Malang (UM) has led to a reduction in water absorption areas, significantly increasing the risk of flooding. This issue frequently arises during heavy rainfall, exacerbated by suboptimal drainage channels and limited holding capacity, consequently disrupting campus mobility and academic activities. This research evaluates the holding capacity of existing drainage channels at UM using a quantitative descriptive method. Hydrological and hydraulic analyses indicate that, theoretically, the channels should be able to accommodate a design flood discharge of 11.9 m3/second. However, field observations reveal that flooding persists due to an ineffective drainage system, characterized by a lack of inlets, damaged sections, and sedimentation. This study serves as a crucial foundation for UM to develop comprehensive and sustainable drainage solutions, ensuring uninterrupted campus operations amidst ongoing development. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2025.
