Numeracy skills are the ability to think by using mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and tools to solve everyday problems in various types of relevant problems. In improving numeracy skills, it is necessary to improve numeracy skills by exploring other skills involved, namely the ability to formulate a problem into a language or mathematical model, where these skills refer to algebraic thinking skills. The purpose of this study is to describe the algebraic thinking profile of students in solving numeracy AKM problems based on their level of mathematical ability. The subjects of this study were three students in one of the State Junior High Schools in East Java who were in class VIII, namely one student with high mathematics ability, one student with moderate mathematics ability, and one student with low mathematics ability. The instruments in this study include a mathematics ability test, numeracy AKM test, and interview guidelines. The results showed that students with high mathematics ability were involved in all algebraic thinking activities including generalization activities, transformation activities, and global level-map activities. Students with moderate mathematics ability involve two algebraic thinking activities which include generalization and transformation activities while students with low mathematics ability do not involve any algebraic thinking activities. The results of this study can be used as a reference in recognizing the characteristics of students' algebraic thinking and making learning plans or activities that meet the needs of algebraic thinking by considering students' mathematical abilities, especially for students who have less mathematical ability. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
