Implementation of the Total Opportunity Cost Matrix – Maximum Difference Extreme Difference Method Approach for IBFS on Balanced Transportation Problems

Abstract

Transportation problems related to minimizing distribution costs involve two method stages: the search for an Initial Basic Feasible Solution (IBFS) and optimization testing. The results obtained in the initial solution will influence the optimal solution, so it is important to start solving the transportation problem with a good IBFS. One of the newest methods for obtaining IBFS is the Maximum Difference Extreme Difference Method (MDEDM). MDEDM does not always produce IBFS without improvement or an optimal initial solution because it only works well on transportation problems with small-sized matrices. Meanwhile, methods such as Vogel’s Approximation Method (VAM) and Modified Extremum Difference Method (MEDM) obtain better IBFS or optimal solutions when combined with Total Opportunity Cost Matrix (TOCM). Therefore, this research aims to determine the IBFS results using the approach or combination of MDEDM on TOCM (TOCM-MDEDM) to minimize the costs of balanced transportation problems. The IBFS results of TOCM-MDEDM were compared with MDEDM and the general method Least Cost Method (LCM). TOCM-MDEDM was confirmed to be a new realistic alternative method because of the 20 transportation problem data examined, TOCM-MDEDM produced more IBFS without improvement compared to the other two methods. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
