Green chemistry learning: Project based integrated local wisdom to cultivate environmental awareness and student learning motivation

Abstract

This quantitative study examines the impact of project-based green chemistry education integrated with local wisdom on high school students' environmental awareness and learning motivation. In the face of global ecological challenges, bridging traditional scientific concepts with indigenous cultural values offers a potential pathway for more contextual and meaningful secondary education. The research involved a population of 10th-grade students in Indonesia, utilizing a purposively selected sample of 138 participants across diverse geographical regions, specifically Jakarta and Kalimantan. To ensure data integrity, environmental awareness and learning motivation were assessed using instruments that underwent rigorous prerequisite testing to establish high levels of validity and reliability. The results of the data analysis demonstrate that this integrated pedagogical model significantly enhances student outcomes. Specifically, the project-based approach influenced environmental awareness ( F = 88.002 ; p < 0.05 ; η² = 0.393 ) and increased learning motivation ( F = 83.627 ; p < 0.05 ; η² = 0.381 ). To further validate the interconnectedness of these outcomes, a simultaneous Pillai's Trace analysis was conducted, yielding significant results ( F = 43.788 ; p = 0.000 ; η² = 0.393 ), confirming that the model effectively targets both variables concurrently. These findings suggest that embedding local cultural heritage into the science curriculum fosters a deeper connection between students and their environmental responsibilities. The integration of green chemistry principles with regional wisdom provides a framework for sustainable education that resonates with students' lived experiences. This study recommends that future research explore the model's influence on broader competencies, such as critical thinking and scientific literacy. Ultimately, these results offer a robust empirical foundation for educational policymakers in Indonesia to systematically incorporate local wisdom into chemistry curricula. Such a transition is vital for developing a generation of students who are not only scientifically proficient but also culturally grounded and environmentally conscious.
