Abstract

This study examines how Islamic piety is digitally produced, circulated, and contested within Indonesia’s hijrah youth movement, focusing on Yuk Ngaji Malang. Drawing on 1,351 TikTok videos alongside participant observation, interviews, and digital content analysis, the research maps religious authority across three levels: elite influencers (macro), movement platforms (meso), and local communities (micro). Findings reveal that the transition from stage-based Islamic performance to the TikTok feed represents a structural reconfiguration rather than a rupture–shaped by platform algorithms, format compression, and pop-Islam aesthetics. Yuk Ngaji Malang’s live Quran teaching strategy exemplifies how micro-level communities translate offline pedagogy into synchronous digital publics, prioritizing participation over influencer branding. A conservative counter-current, represented by khilafah-tagged content, pursues algorithmic infiltration while achieving substantially lower reach. The study contributes to debates on digital religion, Islamic youth movements, and the mediatization of piety in Southeast Asia. © 2026 The Author(s).
